Odd (and expensive) Decanters

by Bill Spohn » Wed Jan 04, 2017 2:19 pm

One of the members of a local tasting group used to collect every oddball decanter shape he could find. It looks like he isn't alone, judging by Riedel and others models.

Riedel Swan Decanter (that would be pretty messy toward the end of a wine tasting evening!)

At a restaurant a few months ago, a somm put our wine in one of those Grand Couers. It was meant to me as a compliment as everybody else's wine went in regular decanters, but it was hell to pour from and they had to move a two-top over because it wouldn't fit on our table. Whoever's decision it was to buy THAT; yikes!

That thing goes for 3,000 quid! I wouldn't touch it - let a waiter drop it on the floor!

Interesting page on Meneau

You're kidding. Three grand? Insane. Insane that the restaurant we were at (Semiahmoo resort) would have it. Of course all it did was expose their naivete in thinking this dysfunctional contraption--there's no other word for it--would impress serious wine people. And our poor waitress--definitely required a contortionist, which she wasn't.

The Grand Coeur looks like hospital equipment, not wine service equipment!

I'll admit the Swan looks cool to me, just for the lines and the effect. But there is no way I would buy or regularly use any of these.

Make sure the first wine of the night goes in one of those, not the last wine of the night.

Talking about decanters that look like hospital equipment, what does this Riedel Tyrol decanter remind you of?

This is what I thought of when I saw it. Something to bear in mind if you get caught short in the restaurant when you have finished your wine.

Ah, Bill I erred. Right pic, wrong descriptor--the decanter we experienced was the crystal mamba.

Never mind medical equipment. The Final Touch Conundrum reminds me of a scale model in crystal of the digestive tract.
