WTN: Mordoree Ormes St Cosme Rousseau Meao

by Bill Spohn » Tue Jan 03, 2017 9:02 pm

Impromptu gathering at my favourite local restaurant today and some blind tasting notes.

2014 Domaine de la Mordorée Tavel Rosé La Dame Rousse – light pink, nose like juicy fruit gum, fair balance and clean dry finish.

2005 Andre Goichot Santenay 1er Cru La Maladière - Medium dark, nice mature nose with smoke ad tar, sooth, big in the mouth, slightly atypical nose for a Burg.

1990 Château Les Ormes de Pez – classic claret nose, currant and pemcil shavings, good sweet fruit, medium concentration.

2004 Bodegas del Marqués de Vargas Rioja Reserva – not familiar with this producer but good showing. Dark colour, dusty fruit based nose, weighty in the mouth and decent length.

1998 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas – medium colour, slight funk and tar in the nose, medium body and good balance. Elegant and ready.

2005 Glaetzer Godolphin – dark wine, big sweet nose, but no hint of American oak and hard to peg as Australian. A good cab/shiraz from Barossa

1995 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes – good colour, smooth sweet fruit, nose, big spicy fruit in the mouth, well balanced and long.

2004 Quinta do Vale Meão Douro – big leathery fruit nose, lots of soft tannin, earthy fruit coffee and long finish. Good.

Did you bring the Glaetzer? You seem to be intentionally shedding Aussie wines of late....

Is Glaetzer known for using American oak?

The Amon-Ra certainly shows primarily American notes.

From their site:

The wine is then pressed and transferred to French and American hogshead barrels

Guess in the case of the Godolphin it leans more toward the French?

Well, the main wine from Quinta do Vale Meão is one of the prestige wines from the Douro so it is not a QPR wine (although it goes for a mere $100 south of the border... I've not been tempted). They make a second wine called Meandro, which is pretty good (although somewhat international in style) which fetches $20-$30 a bottle here. Not sure Douro delivers every time, but there are quite a range of wines, some offering decent QPR, others clearly overpriced. Ramos Pinto's Duas Quintas has been very nice for few vintages and makes a good everyday bottle ($12-$15 here) and Crasto VV is a reliable step up to the next level.

Current BC prices on Quinta do Vale Meão is $135 Can. for the 2013. The Meandro is $31.

All this Portuguese talk made me get out a 2000 Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines to sample soon (no Jenise, not at the next lunch!)

FYI - just out of curiosity, I opened a bottle of the 1997 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas tonight just to see how it was doing. While the 98 was good, this one kicks ass! It elicited no less than 3 "Hey, this is pretty good!" from SWMBO, and she is not very free with her compliments to wines. And it was, Riper than the 98 but also sweeter going in and longer finish. Down to my last case and it is being moved to current drinking status!

Goes against the common wisdom for the vintage does it? '97 was supposedly great in the north but not in the south. Is St. Cosme just an outlier there or was the vintage actually one that wasn't so presentable early on, but had the stuffing for long-term?
