So for dinner last night we decided to pop one of the Williams Selyem pinots I bought recently at Costco.
2014 Williams Selyem Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
Deep garnet-purple color, expansive nose of dark fruits and violets, grand-cru level concentrated fruit on the palate without coming across as extracted. Our first WS in many a year, and much more worthwhile and impressive than expected. Swoon inducing.
Which induced a sense of elation, the kind that makes one commit to going out tomorrow to buy every last bottle, so for a reality check we opened a wine that costs less than half what the WS did:
2014 Wind Gap Wines Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Pleasant, but just that. Disappointingly simple compared to what I remember about the 2013. Drinks like an under-$20 wine. Not worth $39 (local price).
Which got us thinking: was the '13 Wind Gap really that good? Or is everything just pale compared to the Williams Selyem?
Dammitjanet, open another bottle!
2013 Wind Gap Wines Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Spicy nose of cinnamon, dried thyme, cola and sage with and green tomato leaf on a palate of berry fruit and tomato leaf. Exactly as remembered, and vastly superior to the '14.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
