Grand Cru Gruner? And Dry Creek Standouts!

by Brian K Miller » Tue Jan 03, 2017 12:27 pm

found a wow wine this weekend: Schloss Gobelsberg "Lamm 1" Gruner Veltlinger 2013!

Wow. The bracing salinity and nervy acidity of standard Gruner, but a delicious honeyed richness (almost sweet) and body that went far beyond my usual (limited) expectations. Was utterly delicious with pork red posole.

From the weekend: 2013 Michel Schlumberger Dry Creek Zinfandel. This was a big, rich wine. I would expect not to like it, but there was a meaty savory core and a litheness that added something extra to the Big American Zinfandel standard. Plus, Black Pepper! Lots of black pepper.

2013 Preston Family Carignane Dry Creek. Definitely some red-fruited weedy/berry character of Carignane, but this wine was more about acidity and a savory, almost saline character. Quite palate cleansing-would be good with food although we finished the bottle while watching the amazing and mesmerizing WESTWORLD.

That Lamm is a heck of a wine. Look for the Renner from Gobelsburg It's almost the same quality for a much lower price.

Yes indeed! I don't have a lot of context for GV wines, but I know when I taste something special! :P

Will look for the Renner. Thanks much!
