by TomHill » Tue Jan 03, 2017 9:23 am

Finished up this box on Novy's last night:
1. Novy Syrah SonomaCnty (14.5%) 1999: Dark color w/ some browning; strong cedary/pencilly/oldRed/tired slight smokey/oak slight blackberry/Syrah somewhat interesting nose; soft quite tangy/metallic tired/oldRed/cedary flavor w/ light astringent/drying tannins; med. tangy/metallic rather tired/oldRed finish w/ light bitter tannins; somewhat interesting nose but pretty tired on the palate.
_______________
2. Novy Syrah Page-NordVnyd/NapaVlly (15.1%) 1999: Dark color w/ some browning; strong blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah/bit peppery rather toasty/smokey/oak slight earthy/dusty bit mousey/funky/wet wool interesting attractive nose; soft quite tangy/metallic bit cedary/oldRed some blackberry/ripe/Syrah bit smokey/toasty/oak flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long quite tangy/metallic some blackberry/Syrah some smokey/toasty/oak finish w/ light bitter tannins; still has fruit left and offers up some pleasure but headed downhill.
_______________
3. Novy Syrah Garys'Vnyd/SantaLuciaHighlands (14.5%) 1999: Very dark color w/ some bricking; very attractive strong herbal/rosemary/thyme some smokey/toasty/oak ripe boysenberry/blackberry/Syrah/cold-climate peppery/dusty rather complex/perfumed nose; quite tart/tangy bit metallic strong herbal/thyme/rosemary rather blackberry/licorice/boysenberry/Syrah/bit peppery rather smokey/oak flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long/lingering rather tart/tangy/metallic rather herbal/rosemary/thyme/pungent some blackberry/licorice/Syrah/boysenberry/ripe some smokey/charred/oak complex finish w/ light tangy tannins; quite an attractive SLH/herbal Syrah nose but starting to how that tangy/metallic character of a wine in decline.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The SonomaCnty was pretty much DOA, though not as much as most Zins would be. The Page-Nord was still holding in there. But the Garys' was easily the best of this threesome. It offered up much pleasure but starting its downward spiral. All three had that tangy/metallic character of a wine in decline.
