WTN: Majestic Dönnhoff Eiswein

by David M. Bueker » Mon Jan 02, 2017 9:15 pm

1997 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Eiswein - Germany, Nahe (1/2/2017)
I am not certain how to describe a wine such as this Eiswein. It's one of the most integrated wines I have had in years. Only a slight bit of prickly acidity that catches in the back of the throat betrays this as Eiswein rather than an utterly majestic auction-level Auslese. I could list all the fruit and spice flavors, but it's more relevant to try to convey how the wine feels; the richness and viscosity caress the palate, leading to an incalculably long finish. I am not sure if any of this conveys the true experience of the wine, but it's how it felt at the time.

It tasted sweet then? I recall some Eisweins I drank while living in Germany (primarily Saar wines and one from Baden) that were so balanced with acidity that they didn't taste sweet.

Jane,

Eiswein ripeness levels were not codified until 1982 or so. There used to be eiswein at much lower sugar levels than now, so with that acidity they could be much less sweet.
