Trousseau Gris..what to expect?

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Mon Jan 02, 2017 2:21 pm

Found a bottle in the wine store at West Edmonton Mall of all places so was intrigued to try as I have had no previous experience. I did check out CT and was surprised to find quite a few references including a note about Gray Riesling.

2013 Zeitgeist Trousseau Gris, Russian River Valley.

Not a winery that appears to get much notice. Good natural cork, $30 Cdn, 13% alc. The color is best described as a medium lemon/copper/onion skin. Saw some reference to "orange wine" but not this one folks.
Some apricot on the nose along with grassy tones, peach. Initial entry thought is dry-ish, refreshing, crisp to a degree. Good grip and acidity. Citrus on the finish, mineral, melon, peach maybe? Complex but hard to pin everything down. "Could mistake for a Sauv Blanc" from across the table. Served blind would be of interest!!

Never heard of the winery, but gray Riesling is another name used for Trousseau Gris.

If the wine has a copper or onion skin color then it most certainly saw some skin contact/orange wine handling as straight TG is quite pale.

I'm guessing this came from Fanuci Road (sp?). Seems to be the primary source for TG in California, although I recall that Roger King in Suisun Valley has some!

Given that the wine is designated RRV, it pretty much has to be Fannucci.
