WTN: New Year's Eve with my family

by rainer.volz » Sun Jan 01, 2017 1:21 pm

Wines consumed on New Year's Eve with my family.

2010 Domaine Ostertag Riesling Muenchberg (Alsace Grand Cru)
Wonderful tension between ripe yellow fruits and stony/smoky, mineral notes on the nose. The palate is characterized by sweet white/yellow fruits and by its highly aromatic, vibrant acidity, which gives the wine a beautiful structure, juiciness and length. I like the energy and youthfulness in this wine. I would consume it at this stage, which should preserve for another 5 years. My subjective rating: 92/100.

2009 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Pomegranate, herbs, sweet wood and tar on the nose. Benefits from airing. Medium concentration and length. Rather boring and disappointing. Will try this again in 5 years. My subjective rating: 88+/100.

1995 Robert Weil Riesling Kiedricher Gräfenberg Auslese
Who can resist this scent? A cool touch of tropical fruits, a racy acidity accompanied by mineral notes and a hint of beeswax. Enormous freshness, fruitiness, precision and delicacy on the palate. The wine is very rich and complex, but it comes very light on its feet. Easy drinking with great pleasure. Should keep up well for another 5-10 years. My subjective rating: 95/100.

1990 D'Oliveiras Madeira Malvazia
Honey, dates, figs, coffee, cinnamon, smoke, sweet wood, ginger and lemon on the nose. The very intense palate confirms these aromatics. This is indeed an interesting companion for rich pastries and strong coffee. Should keep up well for another 10-20 years. My subjective rating: 90/100.

Happy New Year to all of you!

Were these wines with dinner or just sit around and mingle? Nice flight regardless :) .

The Ostertag Riesling we have enjoyed with the starter (chicken), the Châteauneuf-du-Pape with the main course (lamb and vegetables), the Weil Riesling before the dessert and the Madeira with pastries and coffee.

Interesting note on the Clos des Papes. I've had a few at the generosity of friends. Some very old ones were quite nice, but anything remotely recent (last ten years or so) leaves me shaking my head. What I've tasted, like your bottle, shows no justification for the price.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Clos des Papes died in 2003. Anything after that is Zombie Clos des Papes.

My yesterday's Clos des Papes 1999 was excellent (TN in separate thread). IIRC 2003 was a year when Parker awarded 100 points to Clos des Papes and it was also the year when the Avril family decided to hike the price to such a level that my favourite Rhône expert in Belgium decided to import them no longer. 2001 is the most recent year in my cellar.

Oops--I recently purchased two bottles of the 2009 Clos des Papes.
