WTN: excellent and cheap Cal. cabernet

by Jim Grow » Thu Dec 15, 2016 9:09 pm

I recently bought a mixed case of Cal. Cabernet from a central Ohio retailer on high recommendation of one wine in particular, the 2014 Justin Cabernet from Paso Robles. Since I am giving some of this wine to my sister-in-law I felt compelled to try one. Glad I did! OMG what a wonderful wine! The nose is all about plum and dustiness but it gets a lot better on the palate. The flavors are all about plum and chocolate and a touch of herb with good tannin structure and a long finish. For $19 with case discount (tax not included) I will very soon be buying much more. I'd probably keep this note to myself until I had acquired my allotment but I think there are few central Ohio followers of this site! abv of 15% but not at all volatile. This wine will only get better, probably not 20 years out but 10-12 for sure.

Jim, glad the alcohol didn't scare you away. Justin has many fans--it was the earliest of Paso wineries to get on the map of wider geek consciousness and has a great reputation. I've enjoyed it in the cooler vintages, though I'm not sure the words 'cool vintage' ever apply to Paso.

Btw, I think the winery was purchased in recent years by Kendall Jackson or some other big conglomerate.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
