Bill, my notes:
2012 Hanzell Sonoma Chardonnay - Agree with your assessment and delighted that you enjoyed this so much. The initial chatter that tried to decide whether or not it was Burgundy was very satisfying--not so easy for a California chardonnay, let alone from a fatter year like '12. On first taste, though, I was a bit alarmed as the last bottle we opened was tauter and seriously Chablis-like.
2010 Aubert Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons – Hmmm...my notes say Lauren Home, not Larry Hyde. Wonder which it was? I really enjoyed this, yes it was big and had 15.2% but it was so structured (I proudly note I guessed Aubert and '10), with lemon, butterscotch, white grapefruit and that delicious grassy component.
2001 Ch. De Beaucastel Vielles Vignes Roussanne – I noted the color as "orange-y gold". Obviously mature color with fruitcake, apricot and toffee. The oxidation never fully retreated for me, but in this case it was pleasurable and, quite the coincidence, a killer match for petrale sole in coconutty red Thai broth. Delightful.
2005 Latour Giraud Volnay Clos des Chenes – Initial nose of rotten egg, but spicy cherry fruit on the palate was convincingly Burgundy.
1996 Ch. L’Angelus – Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. One of the best Bordeauxs I've had in quite awhile.
1982 Ch. Batailley – Dusty nose with herbs that I thought might be an Olga Raffault Loire CF. Fully mature, and it fades in the glass. Drink up.
2002 Mitolo Savitar - We differ quite a bit on this one. Tarry, super ripe, pruney oxidative notes, no tannins. I couldn't enjoy it.
1975 Taylors Port – Like you said: Warm spicy nose, rather sweet in the mouth and medium length. Very nice.
