Thierry Violot-Guillemard 2004 Pommard 1er Cru "Rugiens." This was an expression of Pinot that at times seemed more like an aged northern Rhône or a Barolo, not in body but in aromatics; very deep and brooding earthy and savory flavors, with strong accents of tar and licorice. Very nice, and a good choice with the meal (at the center of which was an Ottolenghi roasted carrot and sweet potato recipe accented with tomatoes and capers). A bit of rough and drying tannin on the finish makes me want to hold my remaining bottle for five more years; but the absence of much remaining primary fruit makes me wonder whether that's such a good bet after all; it's possible that this is as in-balance as it's going to get....
