WTN: J.J.Prum GraacherHimmelreich Auslese '06..(short/boring

by TomHill » Mon Nov 07, 2016 11:40 am

Saw several cases stacked at KoKomans this weekend, so took it for a test drive w/ John ystrday:
1. Joh.Jos.Prum GraacherHimmelreich Auslese (EA; 8.0%; QmP/Auslese; A.P.Nr.2 576 511 12 07; www.Valckenberg.com) 2006: Deep golden color; beautiful intense Mosel valve oil/petrol/smokey some botrytis/apricotty cedary/pencilly very complex classic middle-aged Mosel nose; lightly tart fairly sweet (3%-5%??) very strong/intense Mosel valve oil/pencilly/cedary/petrol strong botrytis/apricotty very complex old Mosel flavor;very long/lingering rather sweet lightly tart/balanced very strong Mosel valve oil/petrol botrytis/peachy/apricotty pineapple/R/mango/floral light slatey/steely finish that goes on & on; a terrific example of a 10 yr old Mosel that will go another 20 yrs; a steal at $40.00 (KK).

1. Noticed 2-3 cs stacked and then did a double take when I saw the vintage was 2006. So thought I'd try a btl this weekend. I was mightly impressed. I'm going back for more.

Probably go a lot longer than another 20 years. 2006 is a big, rich vintage with serious legs.

Probably you're right, David. It's me that might not make another 20 yrs!! :-)
Had a week ago a SchlossJohannisberger '71 Auslese that was magnificant. These wines are ageless.

1971 was before Schloss Johannisberg went into its quality slump, wasn't it? I remember that in the 1980s, when I first became interested in German wine, it and Schloss Vollrads were notorious under-performers.

Yes. SJ went downhill from about 1976 or so. I have had a few promising bottles from the mid-2000s, but so far nothing legendary.

I thought I had a single of that J.J Prum wine but looked and it is the 2004. Hopefully it has plenty of life left on it. I had a couple bottles many years ago of the Schloss Johanisberg 1976 Auslese (pink capsule) and they were fabulous so their downhill slide must have started a bit later.

2004 Prum are in no danger of going downhill in your lifetime.

My experiences with 1976 SJ wines are less than stellar. OK, much less.
