During some recent cellar organization I managed to locate a bottle that had gone missing for a while, a Domaine G. Roumier 2002 Bourgogne, purchased for $25 more than a decade ago. I didn't have great expectations for a 14-year-old basic Burg that I'd intended to drink years ago, but this was really beautiful. Very floral nose but thin at first; after about 10 minutes of air, it took on depth and turned into a lively wine with fresh deep red fruit, just enough acidity, and a silken finish. Notes of earth and spice here and there, but mostly just a lovely, pure, and mature expression of Pinot, inviting contemplation. Now I really look forward to opening our last 2002 village Chambolle... assuming I can find it.
cheers, Patchen
