WTN: Skeleton GrunerVeltliner Burgenland '13....(short/borin

by TomHill » Fri Nov 04, 2016 6:49 pm

Bought this to have w/ Susan's ChickenPotPie tonight for diner. Big mistake:
1. Skeleton GrunerVeltliner (12.5%; www.SkeletonWine.com) Fuchs H./Glanz/Burgenland/Austria 2013: Light gold color; light GV/mildly fruity simple/vapid nose; lightly tart light GV/fruity bit tangy/metallic simple flavor; short light tangy/metallic lightly fruity/GV finish; speaks of GV w/ a whisper; a simple/vapid GV totally devoid of any interest and dull as dishwater. A ripoff at $9.50/litre

1. I bought this wine w/ low expectations. This wine delivered that and exceeded those low expectations. They advertise their wines as coming in "huge" 1 litre btls. They also have an Argentine Malbec that I'm not likely to try, either.
To add insult to in jury. This wine was closed by one of the short Stelvin screwcaps. When you open these screwcaps, they don't separate at the score in the screwcap. The lower parts just splay apart on the screwcap, sticking out in these lethal blades. As I try to remove these parts so I could screw the cap back on, I sliced open my finger. Blood all over the place. I'll never buy a wine closed w/ a short Stelvin again. Too dangerous. Be warned. And stay away from a Skeleton wine...even around Halloween.
There is a Heinrich Fuchs winery in the Burgenland. I'm not inclined to try any of their wines. The name Klaus Fuchs gets my dander up..think ManhattanProject. Undoubtedly no relation.

Sorry it sucked
But you should have opened a Skeleton bottle 10/31
Also, are you sure Stelvin? They usually make a quality product.

Dale,
It is a Stelvin-like closure but don't know if it's made by Stelvin or just a cheap
knock-off.
The Stelvin closure has a sleeve that extends several inches below the cap
down onto the neck. You grasp the sleeve, twist, and the cap separates neatly from
the sleeve where it's scored. No problemo.
In this "short Stelvin" model, there is just a small flange the extends just a cm or so
below the score-mark on the cap. They are damnably hard to twist off and when you finally
get it off, there are these little 1 cm blades (4 of them) extending from the removed
screwcap. They don't separate from the screwcap and just stick out, waiting to slice
off a finger or any other bodily parts in the neighborhood. It's hard the screw the cap back
on w/o slicing up your finger.
I sent my TN to the importer, but doubt that I'll hear anything from them.
But be forewarned...avoid these short Stelvin-like screwcaps. They're lethal.

I think Robin also recently reported on short screwcap (but w/o blood)
