My Burgundian Sauvignon Blanc!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Fri Nov 04, 2016 12:21 am

Yup forumites, it is a fact of life! Here is a link to explain the appellation of Saint-Bris>

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Bris_AOC

TN: 2014 Domaine de Mauperthuis Burgundy Cotes d`Auxerre, Saint-Bris.

12.5% alc, good natural cork, $23 Cdn, Lot MISB 143015.

Light lemon in color, quite a restrained sauv blanc nose here but floral, blackcurrant, grassy, mineral tone.." no pee like one of those pungent Touraine whites" from across the table! I had to remark that style has changed somewhat over there, grin.
Initial entry thought is dry, non-searing acidity, some gooseberry. Very nice mouthfeel, good length, nice mineral tone too, Overall not too profound but enjoyed with pan-fried chicken breast and scallop potatoes, fiddleheads (frozen).

I've seen a few St. Bris around, and most were unusually good values. $10ish down here.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I have have had good luck with my purchases of Saint-Bris (c.€6) at two successive Foires aux Vins. Last year's was from Clotilde Davenne and this year's from Marsigny. Quantities must be quite small because there was none left at the end of the Foires for repeat purchases. That is definitely better QPR than any Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé though there are nowadays some close QPR rivals from Touraine, e.g. Chidaine, and from Reuilly and Quincy. I doubt whether I could distinguish blind between these different sources of SB except at the top level where Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé go for much more sophistication with prices to match.

My best Saint-Bris was cuvée Corps de Garde from Jean-Hugues & Guilhem Goisot which had an intensity rivalling dearer Sancerre at c.€12. They also make two simpler but very good cuvées.

Incidentally there are now some excellent reds coming from the area round St.Bris (mostly from Pinot Noir but sometimes blended with a little César, a local variety). Goisot makes some of the best with appellation Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre (c.€13-15) and also Colinot from appellation Irancy (c.€17-20).

I've had a load of St. Bris, ranging from bad/insipid to gorgeous. Most in middle, but if you factor in value closer to latter. De Moor probably my favorite producer.
