Matthiasson is finally on the shelf here in NM so tried last night:
1. Matthiasson NapaVlly WW (12.5%; www.Matthiasson.com; 55% SauvBlanc/25% RibollaGialla/15% Semillon/5% TocaiFriulano} Napa 2013: Med.yellow color; rather fragrant floral/guava/fruity light peppery/spicy some stony/mineral/chalky/bit earthy quite attractive nose; light bodied fairly tart/tangy/metallic some floral/pineapple/guava/perfumed talc bright/lithe/zippy bit chalky/mineral/stony flavor; long tart/tangy/bit metallic light chalky/stony light floral/quava/pineapple finish; quite a nice drink Friulian-style white. $40.00 (KK)

1. This is SteveMatthiasson's take on a Friuli WW. The SB is quite subdued and it reminds a lot of a Friuli TocaiFriuliano. Since most of those clock in about $20, this is on the pricey side for what it is.

I have had numerous bottles of Steve's WW over the last 3 vintages, and despite my dislike of Sauvignon Blanc, I really like the wine. IMO it's the best of the California kitchen sink white blends, eclipsing the various entries from Arnot-Roberts, Massican and others.

I have generally found this to be a more complex and fuller-bodied wine than I can get for $20 in Friuli. It also makes a ton of friends at tastings. I wish it was $30, but don't begrudge a few extra dollars for Steve and Jill.
