2005 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (10/28/2016)
From magnum, and this is positively singing. Richly fruity, enough baby fat melted away that there is more spine showing, and the wine has an endless finish of peaches, cherry, warm apple and almost crunchy minerality. So often with delicious wines I am enthralled for 3 or 4 sips then the effect wears off. That did not happen here, as every sip, every pour (and I had 3!) sustained the interest and maintained the fascinating interplay of fruit and minerals. We had opened the 2005 Hermannshohle Grosses Gewachs earlier, which was also in the prime of life, and these was a family resemblance at the core. The GG was more the elegant, reserved twin, while the Spätlese was all exuberance. Among out group we had 6 different Rieslings, all of which showed well, but the magnum was the first and only one drained.
