Serge Dagueneau ..Loire-heads this is for you!

I am seeing a few more wines from Serge Dagueneau on the shelves here in Edmonton. I have just opened a Chardonnay, appellation Cotes de la Charite.. Will post later on but here is a note on a Pouilly-sur-Loire from earlier this year.

TN: 2013 Serge Dagueneau Pouilly-sur-Loire La Centenaire.

100% Chasselas, SC, $22 Cdn. Good find just before I headed off to do my recent bird counts. Crisp, refreshing, quite dry, plenty of citrus tomes with hints of minerality (there is that word again). Stonefruit aromas with peach and orange blossom. Only one glass as the bottle was quickly emptied at campsite by thirsty counters. Believe the vines are over 100 years old.

That's an interesting one, Bob. I don't recall ever having had a Chasselas from Pouilly-sur-Loire. Pouilly-Fumé from SB is much more frequently encountered. It sounds worth seeking out.

Reputedly Chasselas is at its best in Switzerland from the spectacular vineyards overlooking Lake Geneva or from Valais where it is called Fendant. I have never had an overwhelming example.

Thanks Tim, just seen the 2015 Chasselas downtown but only picked up some `15 Willi Schaefer :D .
The Chardonnay needs decant initially I think but has shown up after being open 24 hrs. Advised not to serve too chilled. Stay tuned.

Speaking of Chasselas, had a very delicious version at Eyrie Vineyards in Oregon a few weeks ago. Winemker Jason Lett has managed to nail and enrich the Swiss style without overamping the new world fruit. A very cool curiosity.

Serge Dagueneau Chardonnay Cotes de la Charite, Loire Valley.

$28 Cdn, good natural cork, think I should have decanted on day 1 as this wine showed very little initially.
Pale gold in color, restrained nose with little appeal at first! In fact I thought that this was a bad bottle so put aside overnight.
Day 2...much more appeal on the palate but did not serve too chilled. Non-oaked, lively acidity, dryish, no ripe fruit here. Some mineral tones, apple, some white stonefruit. "Very nice citrus finish" from across the table. Not sure I would re-buy but think that 2015 Serge Chasselas is about to get a new home!
