Interesting comparison tasting at Clos du Val yesterday!
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Definitely shows the cool year vintage character, with a distinctive smooth green pepper notes often found in CdV cabernet. I think there is some underlying red fruit and structure here, though, that will really shine a decade down the road.
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Much more accessible than the 2011. More on the black fruit spectrum than 2011, and the oak vanilla is not showing quite as strongly/. There is an earthy character to the fruit that is attractive, but also a touch, just a touch of roasted character. More drinkable right this moment, but will still age.
Reserve Pinot Noir. Shows more "Carneros Red Cherry" character than typical CdV Pinots, which are often on the earthier side of the spectrum. Very primary in its bright cherry fruit. I do not think I will drink this soon-I want to see if bottle age brings out the "Burgundian" character I associate with this winery.
Estate Pinot. This is more what I expect out of Clos du Val Pinot, actually. Darker and earthier fruit. Savory character. For "drink now", the 2014 is the way to go. Can still age 5+, of course.
