WTN: New Zealand Pinot Noir

2008 Sineann Pinot Noir McGinlay's Vineyard from Marlborough was a very interesting P.N. Sage and sweet cherry on the nose, the palate was more about sweet cherry and cola (just a little bit) with some more herbal note. I normally do not like a strong cola note in my pinot noirs but this was just slight. Probably near peak now, this was quite enjoyable with grilled pork chops.
abv of %14.8 but not hot at all. I think Sineann is an Oregon winery that must have expanded their horizons.

Yes, Sinnean is based in Oregon, but makes several wines from much further afield, including California and New Zealand (both a pinot and a sauvignon blanc). They fly under the radar a bit, but they can be a solid producer, though I've often wondered if a little more focus would be useful - they make (or at least used to make) about 20 different wines each year.

That's right, John. They're kind of an alt.wine producer, open-minded and hard to pin down. But always interesting.

Wine from Marlborough and I've never heard of it. Must be entirely for the US market.

Most likely; they're a US producer in Oregon near the WA border. Have to wonder if they bought surplus juice from someone, but at the same time knowing the winery, they actually might have taken advantage of our opposite seasons just to make wine somewhere else.

Sinnean website says winemaker Peter Rosback travels to NZ each year to make the wines, which are also bottled here. Current release pinot is from Central Otago.
