Château Cantemerle 1996 Haut-Médoc.
Picked up 12 years ago on sale for $40. Seems to be in excellent shape. Initial impression is of cassis liqueur and tobacco on the nose; with a little air, some gaminess comes into the foreground, and shows a lot of graphite and mineral on the palate. Tannins mostly but not entirely resolved. The aromatics flatten out a little over the course of the bottle; there's no impression of mysteriousness or unplumbed depths here, and it's not profound, but it's nevertheless a satisfying, characterful and well-developed middle-weight and middle-length claret, and good value. I wish I'd bought more at the time, as I think bottles in similar condition will keep going for at least 3-5 years.
