It's been a slow week, wine-wise, as we've been off in beer country (Highland and Oskar Blues FTW!) but tonight we had a decisively autumnal dish (farrotto with butternut squash, pecans, caramelized onions, and parmesan) with a Terres Dorees (Jean-Paul Brun) 2001 Beaujolais "L'Ancien," Vielles Vignes. Last of these in our cellar, I think. This always had a fair bit of funk, but tonight the funk's restrained and blows off pretty quickly, revealing a nicely developed but still lively wine, with an initial hit of barnyard penetrated by a beam of sweet cherry-stawberry fruit surrounded by underbrush, earth, and wet stone, all seamlessly integrated. I can't see this getting any better, but it's lovely now, and a nice way to return home.
cheers, Patchen
