2004 Corté Riva Petite Sirah (Lake County & Napa)

by Jason Hagen » Fri Sep 16, 2016 7:32 pm

  • 2004 Corté Riva Petite Sirah - USA, California, North Coast (9/16/2016)
This is so dark and viscous. In low lighting you would think it was boysenberry syrup. Looks young. At first it smelled you poured vanilla over new oak stave. After about 20 minutes I could smell the big ripe fruit. Very full bodied. Somewhat tasty but completely devoid of any varietal (crap .. variety?) indication. Big tannins. Light acidity but didn't come off as flabby. On the second day there was more red fruit in the mid palate but there is also more heat. Drink up. (87 pts.)

Cheers,
Jason

Corte Riva! This board, in it's various incarnations, has gone through phases where one winery or another gets particular and very positive attention. Corte Riva has been one of those, but I don't recall why though it might have been ownership, like when a famous European wine-making family comes here and opens a winery. Can you shed some light?

I can't really shed any light. IIRC there was some connection to Pride at one time. I don't recall how I ended up with their wine but the Cab Francs, for the style, where very tasty.

Thanks. I've never had their wines--just know it's one of those names I should know!

Corte Riva is owned by a Filipino immigrant couple. Lawrence and Nieves Cortez. Lawrence is also the Cellar Master of Pride. The wine maker is Rommel Rivera who is the Assistant Winemaker of Pride. Hence the name Corte Riva for Cortez and Rivera. They left the Philippines in the 70s and started out as grape pickers, among other jobs, and worked their way up in various wineries until they established their own in the early 2000s.

I'm their importer in the Philippines.
