WTN: Two New Ones from Prima...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Sep 14, 2016 10:19 am

My Prima IlConsorzio shipment arrived ystrday, so I tried two last night w/ my heirloom tomatoe topped w/ fresh basil & Burratta:
1. Dom.Michelot Chard AC: Bourgogne (13%) Mersault 2013: Med.light gold color; clean/crisp minerally/chalky some appley/Chard light smokey/oak quite attractive nose; very tart/lemony strong appley/Chard/chalky/mineral light smokey/toasty/oak flavor; cvery long crisp/minerally/chalky/steely some appley/lemony/Chard bit chalky/earthy finish; a very attractive entry-level WhiteBurg/Chard at a great price.
$20.00 (PrimaIlC)
________________
2. Popolo di Indie VinoRosso al Popolo DOC: LangheRosso (12.5%; IndieWineriesSlctn/SummerWolf; 45% Nebbiolo/35% Barbera/20% Dolcetto grown @ Roccalini/Barbersco; www.IndieWineries.com) Az.Ag.Valdispinso/SantaVittoria 2014: Med.dark color; rather grapey/Dolcetto quite spicy/Barbera/dried Italian herbs slight floral/lilacs slight earthy/dusty bit rustic/grapey nose; rather hard/angular/tannic/tart fairly grapey/Dolcetto/spicy/Barbera interestin rustic flavor w/ light hard/bitey tannins; very long earthy/rustic rather hard/tannic/angular/rough quite grapey/Dolcetto/dried herbs/Barbera finish w/ ample hard/rough tannins; quite an interesting red that speaks of grapey/Dolcetto w/ the Barbera structure on the palate; pretty rough/rustic red that needs some 3-6 yrs of age I would think; a great hearty Italian red at a great price. $14.50 (PrimaIlC)

1. I've been a member of Prima's IlConsorzio club from the very start. Sometimes the wines don't do much for me, sometimes Frank hits 'em outta the park. These two are the latter (selected by Frank's partners in crime)...with the other the Bedrock OldVine Zin, which I know is superb.
The Chard came from right outside the Mersault AC boundaries. I was fairly impressed w/ it for the $$'s. A crisp/bracing acidity w/ an underlying richness that's deceiving.
The Popolo is a blend that comes from SummerWolf of Indie Wines. She has a very interesting portfolio (www.IndieWineries.com) that I would love to taste more of. Wish they were available here in NM. I may try to visit two of her producers in Croatia in a few weeks.

Heirloom Tomatos...

All Heirloom tomatoes are not created equal. This one came from WholeFoods, shipped in from Calif. It was not as good as the Heirlooms grown in a Canadian hothouse they sell in the Winter. This guy was appropriatly mis-shapen & ugly like Heirlooms are supposed to be. But it had the texture of cardboard, the juciness of a raw jicama, and the flavor of an asbestos tile. The fresh basil & the burrata could not save this miserable example of a tomato. Didn't hold a candle to the simple BigBoy tomatos a friend has been supplying me with, grown here in WhiteRock.

I don't know how much regional variation there is in the WF offerings, but I've never seen any heirloom tomatoes in WF worth buying/eating. As you say, the shipping process and distributional chains required make it pretty difficult to get a quality product.

Last summer the heirlooms from Whole Foods in Phoenix were very good. This year they have been as tasteless as regular supermarket tomatoes. Very disappointing.

Even in Berkeley, California, at the Monterey Market (famous for its amazing array of produce) the heirlooms have generally been disappointing this year. The tomatoes that have been consistently intensely delicious have been dry-farmed Early Girls. They're a bit small, and tough-skinned, but they've put the heirlooms to shame
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...
