WTN: Two From Heidi Schrock...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Sep 04, 2016 1:35 pm

Tried these two HeisiSchrock wines over the weekend:
1. HeidiSchrock Furmint (13%; www.Heidi-Schroeck.com; TerryTheise) Rust 2008: Med.light gold color; lightly floral/apple blossom/Mosel valve oil/petrol somewhat stony/mineral/chalky/perfumed talc rather complex nose; quite tart/tangy/metallic rather stony/earthy/mineral/dusty lightly floral/some pineapple rather Mosel valve oil/petrol very interesting/complex flavor; very long tart/tangy rather stony/earthy/mineral light floral/pineapple rather Mosel valve oil/gout de petrol/pungent complex finsh; quite an interesting crisp/zippy/minerally white; much like a middle-aged Mosel T but w/ a strong stoney/earthy component; the acidity should carry it another 5-10 yrs I would guess. $26.00 (KK)

2. HeidiSchrock Beerenauslese Pradikatswein (50% Weissburgunder/WelschRiesling; EB; TerryTheiseSlctn; 12%) Rust/Burgenland 2013: Med.gold color; very strong peachy/apricotty/botrytis bright/honeyed/ripe peach/peach blossom/spicy beautiful/perfumed complex nose; quite tart fairly sweet some botrytis/peachy/apricotty strong honeyed/floral/ripe peach/peach blossom/spicy/nutmeg balanced beautiful/complex flavor; very long/lingering some botrytis/peachy/apricotty strong ripe peach/floral/peach blossom lightly tart balanced complex finish w/ an aftertaste that goes on & on; a good/brisk acidity but balanced so that it doesn't stray into a sweet/sour character; a beautiful dessert wine of a BA level. $42.00/hlf (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I had had the Furmint (I believe) when HeidiSchrock visited SantaFe a yr & half ago & I had the opportunity to meet her. At that time, I found it to be a rather austere/hard/stony kind of white. I thought I'd try it again and was mightly impressed. It's developed that Mosel valve oil character that I almost never find in Austrian whites. Quite a beautiful example of Furmint at a very attractive price. I'll visit Heidi in about a month and a btl of the LimerickLane Furmint will accompany me so she can see what the NewWorld can do w/ Furmint. She should have nothing to fear.

2. This BA wine and the recent Feiler-Artinger Ruster Ausbruch have left me mightly impressed w/ the Rust dessert wines. At the BA/TBA level, the Calif dessert Riesling/GWT/etc are dominated by a rather heavy-handed botrytis/peachy/apricotty character and not much fruit underneath...a bit on the clumsy side. These two and loads of fruit underneath the botrytis..a character you don't often get in Calif botrytis wines. These two were as good as any Kracher dessert wines I can recall.
