WTN: Maye and Roty 2003

by David from Switzerland » Thu Sep 01, 2016 5:56 pm

Simon Maye & Fils Syrah Vieilles Vignes Chamoson 2003
Deep ruby-red. Still quite oaky at first, marzipan, black olive tapenade, sweet and ripe, extraordinarily concentrated, precise, nice body, still firm tannin, quite long. One of the finest Swiss red wines any of us has ever had - and I already thought so at release. dp 93(+?)

Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes 2003
Thanks to Rainer. Beetroot-raspberry colour. Beautifully ripe of course, but still youthful, quite firm tannin and surprising acidity. Strawberry sorbet, minerals, forest undergrowth, pine needles, a touch of that old vine graininess, but on the whole, quelle noblesse! Surely one of the ageworthier wines of the vintage, even if drinking splendidly. 24 hours later perfectly balanced, less hard and without oxidation. dp 94(+?)

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Good for you finding such outstanding 2003s. I have opened a few 2003 bottles (Mugneret-Gibourg, Chevillon) with little luck.

Do not empty your stash - or Rainer´s - of these before I have had the time to taste them, please! Fact is, I have never had a Maye.

Le Valais in Switzerland being an extension of the Northern Rhône, so to speak, where 2003 was a top vintage (at least for those able to cope with the heat and drought), the Maye may be be less of a surprise. Pinot Noir in Burgundy is more fickle, but the top wines are impressive. Roty's super-old vines defy logic anyhow - wines can be quite average in so-called top vintages (for lack of green pruning), and are often standouts in so-called problematic vintages.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Oops! Would have to ask Rainer, as this was my only bottle (which I once got as a present from, guess whom, Rainer…).
