WTN: Liter of the pack

by Patchen Markell » Thu Sep 01, 2016 11:02 am

Matthiasson 2015 California Red Wine, Windmill Vineyard, "Tendu." Sold in a clear one-liter bottle with a crown cap (but no jug-style finger-hole). I think the declared ABV was 11.5%; not sure where Windmill is, but the wine is just sold as "California"; the grapes apparently include Aglianico, Barbera, and Montepulciano. A slightly deeper color than cranberry juice, this wine is a mouthful of tangy strawberries laced with black pepper; so fresh and fruity -- though not exactly grapey, interestingly -- that one thinks it might be partly carbonic. Zingy and delicious and a pretty fair deal at $22 for the liter.

Cool. I had not heard about that bottling.

Meg Maker did a tasting at Matthiasson not long ago. She has some notes up on her site.

Thanks -- and thanks for the reminder about her site, which I keep forgetting to check in on as regularly as I ought to. Too bad Matthiasson's Schioppetino appears to be club only; that'd be fun to try.

I had a bottle it was good but not revelatory.

That is a perfect pun. Bravo, doubly so for a non-native speaker.

Oops. I thought you were from Poland. The name just seemed so thoroughly European.

This is still less embarrassing than the time I thought Robin was a lady instead of the strapping gentleman we all know him to be.

There's definitely some East European in there, but it's three generations back!

Hey, don't judge the English proficiency of a whole city just by its newspaper, Robin.
