Inspired by Patchen (Donkey and Goat Cabernet?)

by Brian K Miller » Mon Aug 29, 2016 8:03 pm

It was club party day in industrial West Berkeley. I've posted notes on other Donkey and Goat wines before, and he is staying true to style, but he had an interesting take on CABERNET from the food of Mount Veeder, of all places.

This is a 2014, so it needs time. And, it is DEFINITELY a Donkey and Goat wine, so there is plenty of acid. But this was a deliciously fresh and tangy take on Cali Cab. Unlike any I have had recently** but still tasting very much of "cabernet" in the lovely anise fruit and mouth feel. I don't usually use the word "fresh" when talking about Cabernet, but this one seems like it could be a fantastic food wine. I could drink it now, but I know I should wait.

** Kenny Litkaprong of Hobo Wine Company has made some really nice, low alcohol, and fresh Sonoma cabs as well under different labels. And at amazing price points, something Jarrod is not doing here. I whine only because I would have lovely to buy a case of the D&G!

I found a D & G carignane yesterday, so bought it. Will be my first but for a seemingly 'off' syrah I had about two years ago. Looking forward to it!

Jenise: If you are interested at all in excellent "lighter" style Carignane, I recommend checking out Two Shepherds in Windsor. For a darker, but still definitely IPOB version, check out DaVero!
