Marchesi di Gresy Martenga DOCG: Barbaresco (14%; www.marchesidigresy.com; www.DallaTerra.com) 2009: Light color; lovely floral/Nebb/violets/lilacs slight licorice/pungent/tarry light toasty/oak bit earthy/dusty/OV fairly complex nose; rather tart/lean/acid/tangy/metallic light/delicate floral/violets/lilacs/Nebb/rose petal slight tarry/pungent complex flavor w/ light bitey/angular tannins; very long/lingering tart/acid/tangy/lean/austere light/delicate/elegant strong floral/Nebb/lilacs/violets/rose petal light earthy/dusty/OV finish w/ lightbitey/astringent tannins; quite a light/elegant/delicate rendition of Barbaresco that can use 5-10 yrs; shows lots of an aged Barbaresco character for so young. $53.50 (KK)

1. As I've been investigating Nebbiolo clones/biotypes/etc; I've taken an interest in Nebbiolo Rose. This is npt a clone/biotype of Nebbiolo (biotype Lampia), but a distinctly different variety (according the d'Agata). NebbRose is widely dissed in B/B for its very light color/lack of anthocynanins and inability to make a B/B that plays well in Monktown. It is grudgingly praised, in some quarters, for the perfume it shows.
Best I can tell, there is only one pure NebbRose made, the ElvioCogno Barbaresco Elena. I was interested in trying this Martenga because it is, according to d'Agata > 20% Nebb Rose. There was nothing in this wine I could pick out as different from any Nebb (biotype Lampia), but it was much more delicate & elegant and very perfumed from most Barbarescos. Lovely Nebb.
