1. The '96 was another btl from my Orphan Stash. Though there were some interesting things therein, it had clearly been compromised by the poor storage conditions of that Stash. Whereas the '01, from better storage conditions, was at or slightly beyond its prime.

So, last week, one of my group brought a btl of this same wine (bought thru me) from his cellar, stored in pristine conditions, and served as a mystery wine:
1. OjaiVnyd Syrah BienNacidoVnyd/SBC (13%) 1996: Med.dark color w/ no bricking; very strong smokey/toasty/oak/classic Ojai light peppery/cold-climate Syrah/blackberry quite aromatic slight bretty/horsecollar very complex nose; lightly tart slight bretty/horsecollar strong Syrah/blackberry/black cherry cola/light peppery very strong smokey/toasty/oak slight Rhonish/smoked meats flavor w/ light smooth tannins; very long/lingering smooth/textured strong smokey/toasty/oak strong blackberry/Syrah/black cherry cola/light peppery strong toasty/Ojai oak very complex finish w/ light gentle tannins; a beautiful example of a mature Ojai Syrah; no signs of drying out but probably not going to get much better,

1. The contrast between this btl and the orphan stash btl was quite dramatic, except for the brett appearing in this one. This is a beautiful fully-mature example of Ojai Syrah.
