WTN: Thank God for passive cellars

by Jim Grow » Wed Aug 10, 2016 8:54 pm

We had a power outage from 2-7:00 PM and it was 89 deg. outside. It could have been much worse/ longer but we were lucky today. I went into the unlit basement cellar and grabbed a cheap Gew., the VINTJS Mendocino Co 2013. I had little hope for anything special but in our circumstances anything would do. Well, this wine with 13.9%abv and light straw color was actually quite nice and very typical for the varietal with spicey pear and a bit of rose petal note and good acidity. I think it was quite cheap at 10$ or so in which case I would happily add it to fill out a case purchase.

Well, it couldn't have been hot enough in the passive cellar after only a few hours to warm the wine up much. And Gewurz in particular doesn't need or want to be icy cold. I think it's better at Belgian beer temperature.

We are in the midst of prolonged heat wave, 90's today, and wines dong quite nicely in our passive cellar, thermometer in cellar shows 64 degrees..This has held true in prior summers as well when temps climbed > 100.
