NYTimes: Southold/NorthFork Shutting Down

A very interesting, yet very sad, Pour by Eric today on SoutholdWnry on the NorthFork giving in to the (tiny-minded) bureaucrats:
SoutholdClosing

What's really sad is that the Meadors were growing & planting some really interesting varieties. I'd heard of them & their efforts, but not had a chance to try them. Lagrein/Teroldego, Schioppettino...all going up in smoke as they're off to Texas to pursue their dreams. So sad.

While I'm not really the pro-bureaucrat kind of guy, my sense of outrage is not firing up here. They bought property where the development rights had been sold. Therefore they paid far less than buildable land. Then they were shocked that they could not build on that land?
I applaud the interesting grapes they planted (and hope someone will buy who will take advantage). But zoning laws in the east end are scarcely a big surprise. And there are plenty of places you could buy to build a winery (though, gasp, not land set aside for agriculture),.

I'm with you Dale. I don't see a reason to be outraged.
