2001 J & HA Strub Niersteiner Orbel Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Rheinhessen (8/2/2016)
Drop $11 on a bottle of wine and wait 15 years. Open the $11 wine with a $100 corkscrew (I used the Durand as the cork was sticking). Pour a little and be pleased it's sound but not impressed. Make dinner. Pour more. Whoa - what's this? It's an $11 kabinett that shows a creamy, coconut and pineapple aromatic, with bruised apple accents, and then on the palate sustains a fine balance and integrated blend of fruit and brown spice elements. There's good finishing acidity that was not evident on the first sip. It gains in presence over 2 hours and is more satisfying at the finish.
If I had any more I would drink them now, but open an hour in advance. Not a great wine, but a very satisfying wine, at a great price.
