Dessert wine help needed

by John F » Mon Jul 18, 2016 9:30 pm

We are doing a neighborhood "movable feast" in early August. We have ended up as the dessert stop and it is a pretty wine oriented crowd. I am pretty weak on dessert wines. Can you guys help with ideas? Port? Icewein? Sauternes?

And how much do specialized glasses matter?

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Ice wine, either Vidal, Riesling or Cab Franc) is often considered dessert on it's own and isn't usually paired with other desserts, such as cake or pie. Serve pie or cake for afterwards with coffee. Ice wine pairs well with fresh fruit and blue cheese.

So much depends on what kind of food you want to serve, and what people will have been eating earlier. Port, icewine and sauternes are obviously delicious wines, but depending on the specific example they might be difficult to match with the food. And August might be hot for port. But, it all depends how particular the crowd is.

Another idea could be a 'lighter' sweet wine (Vouvray Moelleux or German riesling Auslese) that goes well with a range of desserts. Or something sparkling and slightly sweet, which is often a refreshing way to finish the meal/evening.

In early august for a crowded party I would choose something light and refreshing.

White dessert = Moscato d'Asti

Dark dessert = Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco or similar.
