SacBee: Dunne on Original GrandPere Vnyd

by TomHill » Tue Jul 12, 2016 7:33 pm

Interesting article today by MikeDunne on the Original GrandPere Vnyd up in AmadorCnty:
Dunne/GrandPere

The vnyd has been designated by the CalifStateFair as their 2016 "Vnyd of the Year". Didn't know such an honor existed.

The article recounts how Smerling (though not by name) stole cuttings from GrandPere, planed a new GrandPere from those cuttings, and trademarked the GrandPere name...and that the current Renwood Grandpere is not from the Original GrandPere grapes.

We also learn (from RustyFolena/VinoNoceto), that because the old head-pruned vines puts out its shoots in all sorts of random directions, that vary from year to year; that GrandPere reflects the year-to-year vintage conditions more than any other vnyd. Hmmmmmmm....[scratch-the-head.gif]

Anyway...interesting read.
