WTN: '13 Fiano and '88 Volnay with a "modern family"

by Dale Williams » Fri Jul 08, 2016 12:21 pm

Thursday we hosted a dinner- my stepson Dave and his fiancee, his half-brothers, and his erstwhile stepmother. We started with clams and spaghetti (the Danes were surprised to get clams at a home meal), then had pan roasted paprika chicken with mint sauce and salad.

2013 Donnachiara Fiano di Avellino
Full-bodied, dry but with sweet white pit fruit, minerally, a little almond. B+/B

1988 Jean-Marc Bouley “Clos de la Cave” Volnay
Fairly low expectations, village wine from a producer I don't know. But this was actually good- mature but not tired. Black cherry and a little pomegranate, good acids, some coffee and earth notes. Nose is a bit better than the palate, it's somewhat short on finish. But for a cheap Winebid purchase I’m happy. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I'm no expert on the producer but have had a few of his wines over the years and they were all nice, pleasant, perhaps a bit 'rustic'. Which sounds like your bottle.

A Bouley estate at Volnay was the source of one of my most disappointing mixed dozen purchases ('94s and '95s). However, on checking my records, it turns out to have been Reyane et Pascal, not Jean-Marc.

I was more credulous in those days and trusted a Guide Hachette Coup de Coeur and RVF's estate recommendation and let that over-ride my own misgivings on tasting. The '94, Volnay Santenots IIRC, was better that the '95s, the last bottles of which had gone right off by about 2010.
