Pelaverga..... any thoughts?

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Sun Jul 03, 2016 12:30 pm

First time I have come across this grape varietal, tasted at a BBQ last night. I see that Tom and Dale have posted some notes here on WLDG so interested to know impressions from others here on this board?
I will find my notes asap from last night..oh it was a Burlotto wine.

New one to me, Bob. Must have been some BBQ!

Don't think you're going to get too many responses: as the link says

finding wines made from this endangered Piedmontese oddity is particularly challenging

Hi Bob,
I happened to come across this old post and just want to share my fondness of the Pelaverga grape. I've had at it at least from three different producers, maybe there have been more that I don't recall. The ones I remember were made by Burlotto, Fratelli Alessandria and Castello di Verduno. I love the elegant and fragrant wine Pelaverga gives. Even smelling more of roses than Nebbiolo itself! Still it has got enough of the grip of the tannins to make it a typical member of the wines of Piemonte. I'd like to drink it much more often than I do. Sadly, there are none in my cellar.

Cheers,
Anders

I have not come across any since I posted but that will not stop me from looking out. Maybe there is a new vintage of the Burlotto here in town.

I'll be in Piemonte from 6-11 November. Hopefully I'll find a Pelaverga then!

If you come to the chat in 5-10 minutes, we could continue the discussion there!

Pelaverga is made by a number of producers in the village of Verduno. I love the grape, it's spicy, distinctive, and very drinkable. The wines should be available in major markets, but overall production must be very small.

Hi

As Oliver writes a great grape and produced in Verduno, if i remember right 12 producers of Verduno produce Pelaverga.
My favorite is from Poderi Roset, a little producer just outside the village of Verduno.
Stayed at Burlottos agriturismo for a week, a few years ago.

Ciao

Ciao Birger,

12 producers of Pelaverga in Verduno - I guess there are not very many more producers than that in Verduno and that most produce a Pelaverga, is that right?

Pelaverga producers have their own website, only in italian

http://www.verdunopelaverga.it/

from which is possible to deduce some (few) notes

producers are eleven, eight of which from Verduno

currently the annual production is about 140,000 bottles.

Hej Anders,
Note quite sure, but some producers has vineyards in the area of Verduno, and some are outside the village, like Poderi Roset. I know of four producers inside the village ...
All the best
Birger
