W&S/Schildnecht: Riesling Resurgent

by TomHill » Wed Jun 29, 2016 9:42 am

Just got my latest Wine & Spirits magazine and it had an excellent article by DavidSchildknecht: Riesling Resurgent/Oregon's Old Vines & New Partisans. Alas...no link to an on-line copy of it. But it's worth buying the magazine off the newsstand for this one article.
I was totally unaware there was much old-vine R in Oregon. And most of the names he mentions are all newcomers to me. But it inspires me to search out some of the new producers and try their wines. That's always the sign of good wine journalism if it inspires you to try something new. Just like "gobs of hedonistic fruit" inspires me to rush out and buy that wine.

Wines&Spirits magazine is now my favorite wine publication. They have a lot of my favorite writers in their stable. Takes me back to the days of Vintage and WineWorld magazines. And it's not a publication gushing tons of wine reviews. I always learn something new when I read W&S.

Sometime in the 1990's I was visiting Argyle and the wine that impressed me the most was a Riesling (it might have been labeled Nuthouse). When I mentioned this to the staff, they told me I'd better enjoy it now, as it was a favorite wine of the staff but it was being dropped as they could barely sell it. They may have said the vines were going to be grubbed up to make Pinot Gris, which was all the rage in the Willamette Valley at that time. Now I look at the Argyle website and see a Nuthouse Riesling and no Pinot Gris? But yeah, there was a fair bit of Riesling around.

Does W&S do an on line subscription? I seem never to pick up paper magazines anymore.
