WTN: Two Skin-Contact Whites..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jun 27, 2016 7:55 pm

Tried these two over the last week:
1. Brutus ferdinand Rebula (12 mo. skin contact in oak barrels; www.Ferdinand.Sl; 13.5%; U/U) Matjaz Cetrtic/Kojska/Brda/Slovenia 2009: Deep golden/burnished bronze slightly brown color; rather phenolic/resiny/apple cider somewhat orange peel/honeyed interesting complex nose; rather tart/tangy/metallic quite phenolic/resiny/cidery bit honeyed/orangey flavor w/ strong tannic bite; very long quite phenolic/resiny some honeyed/orangey complex finish w/ strong astringent tannic bite; dominated by the phenolic character; not at all oxidative; no signs of RibollaGialla character, no signs of age, no signs of terroir. $41.00 (vSC)

2. Forlorn-Hope Dragone Ramato PinotGris RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnty (12.58%; Frmtd on skins; 177 cs) 2014: Pale red w/ slight bricking; slight phenolic/resiny rather cranberry/juicy attractive nose; some tart/dry lightly phenolic/resiny rather cranberry/juicy/watermelon attractive flavor w/ light tannins; lightly tart very light phenolic rather juicy/cranberry finish w/ light tannins; very low-key phenolic character and more like a good juicy rose. $30.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Ramato: This is a wine that they make in Fruili from PinotGrigio. At full ripeness, PG, like GWT, as a light pigmentation in the skin. If it's made w/ skin contact, it picks up a light bit of often strange color, almost like onion-skin.
_____________
2. Brutus: This was not a fun wine to taste on its own because of the rugged phenolic character it showed. Like most of the wines made w/ extended skin contact, it badly needs spicy food to tame the tannins.
