WTN: Classic Grunhaus Abstberg Spatlese

by David M. Bueker » Fri Jun 24, 2016 7:48 am

1999 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (6/23/2016)
A breath of fresh air in a bottle, this shows youthful citrus and leafy green aromatics over a firm bed of stone. Crisp and refreshing on the palate, with ample acidity to balance the pure, sweet fruit. Amazingly unevolved, so lots of time for this one. Perfectly suited to a pleasant summer evening.

For Tim - this one harkens back to the old style of Spätlese. These days it would likely be released as an Estate Riesling. Delicious though.

Nice. Always fun to hear about Grunhaus and 'classic' is indeed the word one thinks of.

I never ranked 99 as a highly-pleasurable vintage but recently bought a bottle of 99 von Hovel Scharzhofberger Auslese* and would be happy with even a fraction of the pleasure you report.

1999 was a good year in Saar and Ruwer, much more so than Middle Mosel.

Nice note and comment. Not sure that `99 has much Riesling representation in the cellar.

***do have Musar and some Madiran , sure of that :D .
