WTN: Aschero Pigato Ligure di Ponente '14..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Jun 21, 2016 12:44 pm

Dinner @ Delfina (6/10)

Had this wine at Delfina on Fri night:
1. Laura Aschero Pigato DOC: Riviera Ligure di Ponente (12%; L06/15; MassanoisImports/WashDC;
www.Massanois.com) Marco Rizzo/Pontedassio/Imperia 2014
: Light gold color; very fragrant/perfumed
floral/mango/apple blossom slightly saline some mineral/stony lovely nose; fairly tart rather
savory/saline/mineral/stony quite perfumed/fragrant floral/apple blossom/mango lovely flavor; very
long/lingering slight saline/savory quite floral/apple blossom/mango/pineapple finish; almost
perfumed like a Riesling but w/ a saline character; one of the best Pigatos I've tried. $58.00 (Delf)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Delfina: This is a restaurant that has long been on my radar, but don't eat that much in TheCite,
so hadn't yet made it there. When a good friend (Morgan Neiman) took a wait-staff position there a few
month's ago, I knew I'd need to get it on my schedule. The wine list is run by Sally Kim and it is
outstanding. She is given high marks by the distributors I know and makes a point that the staff learn
about wine. The food was exceptionl and the bread (from Tartine Bakery next door) was warm and to
die for. When you go there, ask for one of Morgan's tables...she's the best.
Sitting next to us was a lady w/ whom we struck up a conversation with. She's a (retiring)
UC/Berkeley psycology prof who specializes in organizational decision making, particularly scientific
organizations. Has interviewed several Nobel Laureates in her work. Her new book "In Defense of Troublemakers
The Power of Dissent in Life & Business" looks to be quite a good read. Not that I'd know anything
about "troublemakers"!!
___________
2. Pigato: This is the local Ligurian name for Vermentino, so named because of its spotted/blotchy
skin in ripeness. A trait that I gather does not appear in other Vermentino/Favorita/Rolle grapse.
Supposed they're all, DNA-wise, identical. But, to me, the best are those from Liguiria and TablasCreek.
This Aschero was one of the best I've had.

Tom; I had the great pleasure, in the Spring of 1990, to drink a Laura Aschero Vermentino at a restaurant in Liguria, and it was unforgettable! One of the wines that got me going on Vermentino.
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Splotchy means irregularly shaped spots of color.
