WTN: 2013 Belle Glos Pinot Noir Las Alturas

by JC (NC) » Sun Jun 12, 2016 3:51 pm

Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, CA. 14% abv. Hard-to-read label--could be 14+%. Nine months in French oak barrels. Cool climate but very sunny; average daytime temperature of 78.9 degrees Fahrenheit during growing season. I had this with baked chicken breast and onions in a mushroom sauce. Dark purple color; opaque. Rich, plummy taste of dark fruits with a slight bitter herb note along with the fruitiness. I liked it when I had a taste at a retail wine shop, but for me it became monotonous with continued sipping. In fact I poured about half the bottle down the drain after having two glasses the first evening and one glass the second evening. I just wasn't interested in having any more of it. The Clark and Telephone is still my preferred wine from Belle Glos.

Hi Jane, I have wondered about those vineyard designated Pinots from the Wagner guys. I used to drink the occasional Meiomi but eventually found them to be boring. If I see the Clark & Telegraph for a decent price I'll try one. Will you be joining the group for MoCool 25 this August?

Yes, I plan to be at MO'COOL. Will probably drive to Michigan like I did last year rather than flying into Detroit and renting a car. The Belle Glos wine is Clark and TELEPHONE. I mix up the name too because I like Vieux Telegraphe from the Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

I had a similarly bad experience. Here is my note from last year. (I am not a fan of SLH for Pinot but this wine went above and beyond.)
Wow. This was a gift and even though it is from Santa Lucia Highlands, I thought it would be a fine, well made wine. Nope. This is disgusting and undrinkable. For the aromas, just light a match and the get some over ripe, rotten fruit. The palate is gag worthy. Like drinking a glass of liquid smoke mixed with the cheapest whisky you can find.

Cheers,

Jason

had a Meiomi PN the other night..Don't remember whether it was Jane or Jenise who commented on Meiomi PN's sometime in the past but one of you young ladies nailed it..You called it a Strawberry milkshake..Not my cuppa tea..or glass of wine, wd not buy again
