2006 Thibault Liger-Belair Les St. Georges
I don't drink a lot of his wines, but I immediately see the friendly 'modern' style in abundance. I read a recent report that this was closed, but by my standards this was very accessible, juicy and luscious. Does not necessarily scream 'Burgundy' to me, but then again I probably have my own idiosyncratic view of Burgundy (see below) so who am I too judge. And there is plenty of fine-knit structure to remind me that this is a regal vineyard. Would be interesting to taste this blind with CA pinot noirs.
2001 Gouges Les Pruliers
Ahh, that's more like it. Nothing apparently 'fruity' about this! There is a nice reservoir of the cool black confidently reserved Gouges fruit, but it remains more or less accessible for several hours and never hides behind any wall of tannins. During those hours it goes through a lot of shapeshifting, so I guess it's in the process of evolving. But I don't mean to damn with faint praise when I say that this was not a wall of tannin. There was elegance and energy to the fruit that was positively enjoyable, especially with food.
