TN: 2001 Willi Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, M-S-R.

Purchased for $26 Cdn and cellared for past four years. A.P. # 9-02, 8.5% alc, cork was dry but came out easily. Not sure about the reputation and standing of this weingut? Think a good bargain as I see that the 2013 is over $40 Cdn.
Light gold in color, the nose appeared more expressive on day 1 with white stonefruit, brief gasolein hints, apple citrus."Floral and herbal" from across the table.
No way past its best looking at some CT notes! Very good length after 2 hrs airing, some exotic fruits and sweetness more apparent on day 2. Baked apple, passion fruit, no searing acidity here folks. Still has good structure after 14 yrs in the bottle, fellow taster thought "not sure their terroir was all that distinct".
Food was a very nice pork scallopini in a creamy sauce.

***wonder about relationship with Fritz Haag?

Very old Haag family estate dating back to the 1600s, it split into Fritz Haag and Willi Haag in the 1960s. As you probably know, Fritz Haag (currently run by Oliver) gets a lot more fame and accolades, but I have tasted nice wines from Willi Haag (currently run by Markus).

I'm no expert, but to be a bit clearer the wines from Fritz Haag often struck me as more polished and the wines from Willi Haag were more rustic. The times I preferred the Willi Haag wines were when I was in the mood for the relative lightness. But, to be honest I have not followed them closely over the years.

Thanks Rahsaan, was wondering about the connection and current status of the family. Do you find the wines from Fritz readily available in your area?

At the moment I'm still in Berlin, so yes, they are easy to find!

Back in North Carolina we don't have the most extensive selection of German riesling. But they are pretty prominent and available for shipping from various places.

2001 was first German vintage I really bought a fair amount of. But not enough! So couple years after release I was in a store (Supercellars in Patterson NJ) wasting time between 2 appts when I spotted some 2001 and 2002 B-Juff Kabs, Spatlese, and Auslese, thought great prices, bought a mixed case. Then when I got home realized "great price for FRITZ Haag, this is WIlli."
They ended up being decent values though.

The 1990 Willi Haag Spatlese was one great bottle of Riesling in 2008.

Despite my skepticism in this thread, today I got talked into buying a 1994 Willi Haag BJS Auslese (it actually wasn't that hard to convince me). I'll open in the next few weeks and post a note.
