I was in Ft. Wayne this past week-end and for a few years I have been eyeing some bottles of 2004 Staglin Napa Cabernet. They have been stored on the store floor (cool) with great fills and priced at $86 with a discount tag on each. This time I decided "What the hill" , I'll try to bargain with the manager. I asked the young girl at the counter if she would take $50 for a bottle and she said she would get the manager. When he came out and I explained that those bottles have been sitting there for years and better to take $50/bottle now than watch them go "over the hill", he thought about it for just a few seconds and said "sure". Now I suppose some of you wouldn't give 10 bucks for that wine but the one oldish bottle I have tasted was euphoric and very memorable. If this one is as wonderful as I am hoping, I'll grab the remainders. If it is corked or cooked I will get a refund also. In another store's discount bin I grabbed 3 bottles of 2008 Sausal Estate Zinfandel, Alexander Valley, for $10 each and tried one that nite.
2008 Sausal Zinfandel; Center color of dark purple and rim of brown to amber showing some obvious aged color. Nose and palate were of plum, sour cherry and cranberry with a soaring note of pipe tobacco. Another wine in which I could not keep my nose out of my glass. I hope the other two bottles are equally nice but will not wait too long to find out.
I also bought some more of my present "house red" the 2013 Ch. St. Michelle "Indian Wells " Cabernet for the excellent price of $13.50.
I tried to bold or underline the Stag in Staggerlingly for David B's sake but was not allowed
A successful wine-buying trip. I tried to highlight the Stag in Stageringly for David's sake but was not allowed to.
I doubt that my bargaining in Ft. Wayne Indiana would be legal in Ohio
