by TomHill » Fri Jun 03, 2016 11:21 am

By coincidence, two '87 Calif Cabs were brought by Larry & Steve as mystery wines this week:
1. Kenwood CabSauv ArtistSeries SonomaVlly (12.8%) Marty Lee 1987: Dark color w/ some bricking; rather earthy/loamy bit musty/cardboardy (not TCA)/old Bdx-like/oldCab little fruit rather tired nose; soft rather earthy/loamy/musty/cardboardy no fruit flavor w/ light asiringent/tired tannins; med.long quite loamy/earthy no fruit rather tired finish w/ light bitter tannins; not much left to like in this wine. $25.00

2. Robert Mondavi CabSauv Reserve NapaVlly (U; 12.5%) 1987: Med.color w/ some bricking; very strong cedary/pencilly/smokey/oak light herbal/green olive rather old-timey NapaVlly Cab quite complex nose; soft quite cedary/pencilly/smokey slightly tired/dried out some oldBdx/oldCab light green olive flavor w/ light bit drying tannins; med.long cedary/pencilly/oldCab/smokey light green olive/herbal complex finish w/ light tannins; lots of cedary/pencilly/old Cab character and still hanging in there but barely.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Both of these wines had seen better days but at least the Mondavi was something you could drink. Neither one of the compared to the SequoiaGrove '81 that I had the Fri before when I visited w/ JimAllen.
