Forlorn Hope 2012 Lodi Pinot Gris, Kirschenmann Vineyard, 11.97 ABV (well, you know, +/- 1.5%), $37.50. Probably the deepest pink-orange PG I've ever had, but I don't drink it a lot; has a lightly oily but not heavy mouthfeel; intensely flavorful and complex on the palate, with elements including dried strawberries, grapefruit peel, and white pepper; the skin contact gives the wine a little grip but it's not harsh, and the acidity is just right. This would make a really flexible food wine. I'm still not quite sure what to make of Forlorn Hope, having started with a wine (the Alvarelhão) that was too much of a curiosity to be worth the price; but this one gave a lot of pleasure, in addition to being interestingly complex.
cheers, Patchen
