WTN: 2001 Edmunds St John Los Robles Viejos--WOTY!!

2001 Edmunds St John, Los Robles Viejos, Rozet Vineyard, Paso Robles, 14.2% abv.
Ok, perhaps just a bit of hyperbole to call this my WOTY since we are only a week into the new year, but not much of a stretch for this Chateauneuf du Pape type blend of Moevedre, Syrah, Grenache and Counoise. I tasted this wine once before out of a 16 oz. beer cup and fresh off the FEDEX truck. Despite the handicap of poor stemware and potential travel shock I could tell this wine had a pedigree..I just didn't know how good it could be.
Last evening I had the opportunity to taste it in proper stemware with Dijon marinated grilled lamb chops and it was absolutely stunning. Wonderful, complex aromatics with fruit lifted by refreshing/vibrant acidity. A spicey and peppery finish that lingered longer than dinner guests who won't go home. This wine is in a wonderful spot right now.

Agreed. Steve's '01 are drinking ever so well. I've loved the basic California Syrah, the Rocks & Gravel and the LRV. I'm still waiting to pop corks on the single-vineyard syrahs, but my resolve is weakening.

Count me as another big fan of this wine. I went long on it and I'm glad I did.
It's a joy to drink.

Bill,
I bought a lot of it because I think that, as well as it drinks now, it will be so much more complex with another 5 years or so on it. I just love wines that you can count on today but also know will develop with time in the cellar.

Sadly drained my last bottle of this a few weeks ago, Bill. It sure is yummy.

Come to think of it, I finished my last bottle of 2002 "Who stole the Grenache?" Rocks and Gravel this week too.

I'm pretty sure the '01 is gone. He did sell me some '03 though.

'01 Los Robles can still be had. And the price hasn't gone up.
