WTN: "Da Vinci"

I like the label better than the wine, well, maybe not completely-- it's not nasty wine or anything-- I just don't think Chianti's my "glass o' wine", you know? I've come to at least partially realize that. I say "partially" only because I don't believe I've ever tried a "high end" Chianti and want to save room for a pleasant surprise.

This stuff was quite inexpensive $10 or $12 - can't remember - it's a bit too racy and rustic for my taste. To me it's screaming "unripe" fruit! There's even a very chemical, oh I don't know, something of a tire-store smell on the nose-- petrol/rubber or something. It dissipates a bit after awhile, but doesn't reintroduce anything else in it's place. I would appreciate any "Excellent" Chianti recommendations from forumites.

I do, however, have a bottle of '01 Ruffino Reserva Ducale Chianti Classico that I've yet to de-cork, so maybe my potential Chianti-loving days aren't necessarily numbered quite yet.

For what it's worth, though, a Da Vinci (white) won one of the category awards - in blind tasting - at the Tuscan wine competition I was involved in last fall.

Gallo's influence on Da Vinci is likely significant, but note also that Gallo doesn't own the winery, it imports their product.

I just can't endorse a wine from the people who brought us 'Night Train'. If Gina Gallo stops labeling Andre as 'Champagne', stops using 'Burgundy', 'Chablis', and 'Port' on their labels, AND dumps all current Red Bike wines in the North Atlantic, I'll write her an apology. Until then, it is all 'Gallo Scheiße' in my book.

Prost!

Aaron, I edited my quote of your post for brevity. About the part in bold though, since this is a 2003 vintage I am not sure about the unripe part. I am wondering if this is not made from poorly grown grapes on very young vines? I have tried their upper level wines and found that I didn't want to re-buy.
