Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County.
Despite the cold vintage, this was a deep, rich, earthy version of Carignan. Dark plum fruit, quite an earthy funk that we liked (especially when compared to the disastrous acidic mess of a Pinot we also opened. Not sure what happened, as I loved that Stefania wine at the winery. Bottle variation? Heat damage (although it was purchased in late winter, so....?????)).
Definitely NOT for those with zero tolerance for funk! But, I thought the funk went well with the deep earthy plum fruit in creating a very savory, interesting wine. The Preston bottling also lacked the weedy character you can get with Carignan. I can appreciate that weedy character, but this earthy funk of a wine is a nice version!
I know that some here claim his glory days are over, but I still love the Preston wines!
